The Happy Mondays – Second Loves

The Happy Mondays celebrates things that make us smile and uplift our spirit for the week ahead. For today’s post, I have asked my Byron Bay surfing mate Natalie Kiryk to share her story about the birth of Second Loves, her wonderful pre loved clothing online store. Meet Nat.

I am a traveller, lover of fashion, gypsy at heart with a passion for caring for our planet. Influenced by my overseas travels of many years, before now being in Byron Bay for nearly four years, I have been lucky to experience the most amazing cultures, colours, textures, landscapes, people and of course fashion & styles, which I now feel play apart in my everyday life.

Living and working in Byron allows me to still feel this in lots of little ways. It is such a transient place and for example when I go out garage sale-ing on a Saturday morning looking for new items for Second Loves, I meet the most interesting and eccentric individuals. Every single place I visit, where possible, I love to have a little shop – when I was in London & New York you could say big shop!

There’s something about finding that something special and making it yours, be it a postcard, souvenir, present or that vintage piece with a story behind it. I now feel more aware than ever whenever we do make a purchase we have the choice about where our money is going and to whom. I feel it’s so important to support local business, small shops, farmers, artists, marketeers among others.  Without even realising at the time, I made a silent promise to myself when I first started Second Loves… To shop more consciously! Not just for fashion but anything that I may need from day-to-day. You would be surprised the options available to do so, especially in this region and the treasures than can be found.

The questions you need to ask yourself before handing over your credit card. Australians collectively spend over $6 million a year on fashion items that end in landfill.

Since starting my little online store Second Loves I have been able to dress and post out secondhand & vintage clothing to my beautiful customers & this in itself gives great satisfaction, knowing that we are all shopping consciously by purchasing pre loved items. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the majority of secondhand goods, sometimes I find the quality is even better than products that are made in the now with cheaper materials.

I am now in the process of two very exciting steps with Second Loves. Firstly setting up a small Second Loves studio with an option to come shop by appointment. Secondly my blog secondloves.com where I will share many stories, articles and tips on shopping and living consciously in the fashion world. What you wear each day is an expression of your individuality. And considering the planet as we do, this has to become a priority.

The pic of the group of girls shopping was when I first started up and one of the girls, Jamie, found me online and asked if they could – while on their east coast surf trip up from Victoria – come have a shop. They all scored a few Second Loves items – and it was such a fun experience to have them trying and rummaging and shopping consciously right in my bedroom haha! Next time will be in the studio space!
