Rockin’ Women Wednesdays – Nina Hooper

With just three days to go, entrepreneur Nina Hooper has already managed to secure her goal of $15,000 in Kickstarter funds. All because she believes that you shouldn’t have to feel guilty for eating delicious chocolate cake so she has created one that’s guilt-free, no catches! If you reckon that’s pretty awesome, then consider this: Nina is currently studying astrophysics and Chinese at Harvard in the US.

I know, right?!

This young, beautiful and inspiring woman came into my life by way of her beautiful and inspiring mother. You’ve met Cinzia a.k.a. Nutrition Darling before here on RWW, and you might recall that between us we have walked on more sticky carpet in dishevelled rock ‘n’ roll venues than many of you have slurped on green smoothies. As our lives ebbed and flowed, we have found each other almost 30 years later practising a united mission of clean eating and celebrating wholefoods with a twist of humour and a jolly good nod to our past.

So with all this wellness and entrepreneurial spirit in her bones, it’s little wonder that Nina has set her sights on changing the world one Feel Good Cake at a time. Take a look at the VDO she prepared earlier below.

Meet Nina

Hi, I’m Nina, I’m 21, from Melbourne, and am super fascinated by black holes and dedicate myself academically to researching them. On the side, I also write music, fly planes, SCUBA dive and run a food business called The Holistic. We’ve only recently officially launched retail sales but I’ve been in the product development phase for two years. We make “Feel Good Cake”, the world’s first “guilt-free” chocolate cupcakes. By this I mean that it’s a cupcake without empty calories, one that is made from alternative ingredients that give it higher protein and fiber than any other cake on the market – and without any of the processed junk or preservatives.

One of the special features of our cakes is that they are filled with a chocolate avocado ganache. It’s to die for! The cakes also happen to be vegan and gluten-free. We’re very excited about this product and have big plans to expand across the US and eventually back to Australia which is why we’re currently running a Kickstarter campaign!

A few questions for Nina…

1. What’s your survival food when you’re on tour, travelling or working late in your business? 

Dates and hummus are my absolute staples. I never get sick of them. You can find both (in various degrees of quality) pretty much anyway. Sometimes I just bring bags of dates with me as sustenance (silly, I know).

2. What’s your healthy go-to comfort food – either at home or in a restaurant?

I really love all vegetables, particularly Brussels sprouts, asparagus and eggplant so I’m always excited to see them on menus at restaurants and personally cook with them all the time. Nothing better than olive oil and some veggies.

3. Do you have a secret remedy that keeps either your mind / body in shape? 

Yes, my warm-banana-sundae-porridge thing, it’s divine. That’s why I thought I’d share the recipe below!

4. What’s the most obscure rider or patron’s request you’ve ever heard?

Obscure.. hrmm… someone asked me if our cakes contained drugs hahahah. The answer is definitely no. I think that particular college student felt that there would be a strong market for such a product…

A recipe from Nina

Warm banana sundae porridge
Total Time: 8​mins Serves: 1​

1 ripe banana
1 tbsp dessicated coconut
1 tbsp almond meal
1⁄2 tbsp raw cacao
1⁄2 cup almond milk
For toppings: chopped dates, tahini, fresh berries

  • Mash up the banana with 1⁄4 cup of milk
  • Place mix in a saucepan on the stove until it’s hot throughout
  • Take off stove and mix in coconut, almond meal and cacao.
  • It should form a thick chocolatey paste.
  • Serve in a bowl or sundae glass, pouring the remaining milk around the outside
  • Top it off with dates, fresh berries and a thin drizzle of tahini.
