Rockin’ Women Wednesdays – Jemma Gawned
Jemma Gawned’s contribution to the healing cuisines of the world deserves to be celebrated and well documented. Her homespun intention for distributing her original superfood balls across the gritty streets of Melbourne has blossomed into an important Mecca for the mindful and a respected authentic brand, well buoyed in a market that is drowning in imitation and mimic. When Naked Treaties HQ migrated to Byron Bay around six years ago our universes aligned – thanks to the great wisdom and insight of our mutual friend Barb Stone. No spiritual slouch herself is that Barb – an extraordinary visionary who happens to be mum to one of our awesome Rockin’ Women Lael Stone.
I am blessed to share the story of Jemma as it makes my heart sing and my soul beam with pride. Beyond her striking physical beauty nestles one of the most playful, soulful and cheeky women I have ever had the pleasure to meet, mentor and play with. Jemma’s shine is blinding, and her vision and intention for Naked Treaties radiates through Byron Bay brighter than our iconic lighthouse, providing a beacon of healthy hope and healing amongst a seasonally inflated tourist town.
She’s the girl who ignited the raw-volution and put a decent smoothie on the map in Australia. She knows more about the origins, harvesting and distribution of every healthy ingredient on the market than anyone I know. Together with her beloved partner Chris Mapstone they have created Sacred Sonics working in love, ceremony and bringing in transformative power via cacao ceremonies and music. Please put your loving arms around each other and welcome my beloved friend Jemma….perhaps we should call her J-Raw?!!
What’s your survival food when you’re on tour, travelling or working late in your business?
I love the challenge of eating healthily while travelling! I’ve become the master of packing for road trips, making sure I have a plethora of our raw dips, vegie sticks, crackers, treaties, trail mix, kale chips and smoothies for the start of the journey. You name it, we pack it!! If it’s a road trip I’ll usually take my juicer along with me too and plug it in at the camp site or I’ll take coconut water (the only time I will drink it from a carton!), some green superfood powder like MANNA or our pre-mixed Naked Treaties superfood blends and some raw protein powder. A couple of jars, pop the water and powders in the jar, shake and away you go!!
When I’m in foreign countries I look out for local markets or stop at roadside stalls and stock up on local fruit, lemons and avocados and vegies like cucumber. I always have some sea salt and a fork on board. There’s nothing better than a fresh ripe avocado cut in half and mashed with the lemon and salt. Use the cucumber or some carrots for dipping and voila! Delicious, nutritious, light and clean. Add in some raw nuts and seeds for protein and away you go!
What’s your healthy go-to comfort food – either at home or in a restaurant?
I’m so lucky to always have an abundance of beautiful healthy raw food and treats usually at arms length away! Working in the Raw Bar and our Production Kitchen I am always able to whip up a quick and satisfying green smoothie or juice and grab a couple of Superfood Truffles or Raw Nickers to keep me going! Our treaties are such an easy snack to carry on hand that you can take anywhere and will give you an instant energy hit and leave a smile on your face!
With my busy and active lifestyle it is important for me to keep my energy levels up and to fuel my body with the best possible nutrition I can. Smoothies and juices are so easy to grab and take away and they are an easily digestible source of enzymes, probiotics, vitamins and minerals, and, they taste amazing!!!!
At home I love making up big fresh salads, we have a new vegetable garden that is abundant with fresh leafy greens right now! I love adding things like avocado, sun ripened olives, lots of seasonal crunchy vegetables, dulse or nori and usually a dollop of raw hummus or our new red pepper tahini dressing!
In restaurants I find that I can always alter the menu slightly if need be to create a wonderful and nutritious meal! And there are so many restaurants now that do offer healthy options- chia seed pudding, quinoa salads and even raw main meals seem to be popping up everywhere! Sometimes it takes a little longer in new places to seek out the healthiest places to eat, but it’s always worth it and it is always encouraging to see healthy cuisine being embraced by mainstream places.
Do you have a secret remedy that keeps either your voice / mind / body in shape?
For my mind, I do a silent meditation each morning at sunrise and then a guided meditation while I lie in my sauna afterwards. It’s an amazing way to start each day, its totally calming and centering.
For my body I spend 30 minutes in my infra-red sauna each morning which is then followed by yoga or a run on the beach.
For the past year or so my partner Chris and I have also been facilitating Cacao Ceremonies and I find the strong grounding earth energies and celestial energies that come through heal and soothe and nourish me time and time again. And everyone in the room for that matter! Its quite an incredible experience and one that we both look forward to sharing more and more.
Living in Byron Bay I am also constantly blessed with opportunities to do the things that I love and the things that nurture me and connect me to my spirit. I love going out dancing, meditating, taking a yoga class, meandering through the Byron hills and finding waterfalls. Often I will take some time away to go on Vipassana for some real time of quiet insight or go on another form of retreat to nurture my body and soul. I love traveling when I can and Ive been fortunate to take quite a bit of time away this year in Peru and Canada and Bali- traveling always nourishes my soul and I return inspired and refreshed and with even more gratitude for all I have here.
Naked Treaties’ Match Green Tea Cake
This is a new cake that I offered at the last workshop we did in the Raw Bar. It’s quick, light, refreshing and delicious! Perfect for this time of the year!
For the base
1½ packed cups pitted Medjool dates soaked
3 cups desiccated coconut
1 teaspoon Celtic or Himalayan crystal salt
- Whiz all ingredients together until dates are completely broken up and the mixture is dough-like
- Press evenly into a 22cm spring form tin and set aside
For the cake
1 cup melted coconut oil
Juice of 2 limes (keep skin for decoration)
½ cup coconut nectar/agave or honey
3 large avocados
1 cup coconut meat
1 heaped tablespoon of lucuma (optional)
1 heaped teaspoon matcha green tea (powdered)
1 teaspoon salt
¼ cup of coconut water or almond milk (add a little more if mix is too thick to blend).
- Combine all the above ingredients in a high speed blender until very smooth
- Refrigerate for at least 4 hours to set or place in the freezer if you are short on time
- Serve chilled with macadamia shavings or crushed pistachios, zested lime curls, goji berries, edible flowers and fresh mint
