Rockin’ Women Wednesdays – Steph Prem
Now, I met this bendy goodness goddess of the snow a while back when she was hosting a retreat at Cabarita. For a former Winter Olympian who spent ten years of her life as a professional athlete, Steph is one of the most grounded people I know that has lived much of her life going downhill fast.
What inspires me most about Steph is her resilience – a quality that can only be revealed and never downloaded. Like my gammy-legged self, Steph found herself teaching Pilates through years of rehab, just as I did in order to heal more and limp less. In Steph’s case, her passion for Pilates stems from a four-year rehab stint consisting solidly of corrective exercise and Pilates following a back injury that ended her professional athletic career in 2010.
A five-time Australian Champion, Steph was the only female to represent Australia in snowboard cross at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Following the games, Steph suffered an accident that took her away from professional sports and prompted her to jump wholeheartedly into an enduring health and wellness journey for herself and others.
She is now the proud founder and director of Studio PP and the Premium Performance training method. She has trained and worked alongside some of Australia’s industry leaders, has 15 years dance experience, and is clinically trained. She lives and breathes health, wellness and an active lifestyle.
Steph’s also customer of my old friends at Combi. Now, the Combi kids and I first met when I recruited them to sell coffee at a music festival on Phillip Island for a few years – it’s awesome how wellness reunites so many – I love that bit! But back to SP. She’s a dedicated smashed avo, froyo and heli-boarding enthusiast, and best of all is a walking, talking embodiment of her brand. This makes her a triumphant superstar – and a welcome addition to the Rockin’ Women Wednesday stable of fabulous fillies!
Transitioning from an athlete to a “regular” lifestyle was tough on my eating habits because when you train 30 hours a week, you are constantly eating and fuelling, so it’s hard to shake the habit. Following my accident I also was diagnosed as a coeliac, so that was a complete change of lifestyle for me – goodbye pasta carb loading!
I am obsessed with Combi and the goodness they provide – and because I live at the end of the street! They are organic, fresh and delicious – always a safe bet for me. It’s so easy to grab a smoothie or a chia pudding between classes – and it keeps me on the straight and narrow.
1. What’s your survival food when you’re on tour, travelling or working late in your business?
Bliss balls and chia puddings are my absolute go to! Pre-prepared at the start of the week and taken on the run, or If i’m having a busy week I’ll hit my local cafe Combi and raid their supply.
2. What’s your healthy go-to comfort food – either at home or in a restaurant?
Fish and chips! But I normally go for the healthy version of salmon and quinoa or sweet potato fries!
3. Do you have a secret remedy that keeps either your voice / mind / body in shape?
YES! Accupuncture. I go to a very traditional Chinese medicine clinic every Friday. It’s my non-negotiable to calm my busy body and mind!
4. What’s the most obscure client request you’ve ever heard?
Obscure client requests are normally unrealistic weight loss requirements or adding cms to their leg length!!
